Hailing from the block of Medford, the Massachusetts sweetheart BIA has made waves in the music industry with her unique voice. With support from big names such as J.Cole to Nicki Minaj- BIA has been setting her footprint with hit after hit. Some feathers were ruffled with one of my personal favorites simply titled: I’M THAT BITCH. Let’s take a closer look.
The beat to BIA’s tenacious song was sampled from the original anthem “She’s A B**ch” by the creative genius herself, Missy Elliott featuring the infamous Timbaland. Diving into engineering and production practices, it is a no brainer that all aspects of the song are as crispy as they come, in the best way. The beat was sped up to fit the modern bounce of what these kids are listening to these days to make it more profitable, tastefully.
Producers Timbaland, SkipOnDaBeat and LilRich added reverb to every last word in lines of the chorus creating a dominance surrounding her strength in delivery. Her alliteration in the second verse kept amounting making the next line just as impactful as the one before it. Her flow would switch in the cleanest time slots, reassuring her talent as a rapper was highlighted on the track. Her lyrical prowess left memorable impressions and sent a strong message of confidence living up to title.
A lot of artists these days sample originals but do not carry the same messages thus taking away the magic of the track they use. They also tend to do it in a way that’s mediocre, since they expect the beat to carry them off the strength of it being legendary. I believe that BIA delivered and having Timbaland’s support added weight to her name in the game. She carried the legendary message Missy set years ago and paid homage respectfully and still in her own way. All in all, it seems both versions of being that bitch are the same, just depends on which planet you come from. Missy Elliott (Cancer) - Planet: The Moon or BIA (Leo) - Planet: The Sun. Just remember, whether you’re being called a bitch for your talent, jealousy or as empowerment for yourself – you will be the eclipse of it all. Whether you like it or not.
